Dyscalculia, or a Math Disability
Dyscalculia is a math-related specific learning
disability that can present as an isolated condition, or
in association with other conditions such as dyslexia,
premature birth, or prenatal injury.
Math disabilities can present in many ways, but here are
some of the most common. Students may have one or many
of these difficulties
-
Remembering math
facts
-
Remembering number sequence
-
Estimating numbers
-
Tendency toward reversing numbers or symbols
-
Spatial memory impairment
-
Impaired time perception
-
Poor memory for numbers or sequences
Because math problem solving requires
many cognitive skills, students may struggle in math
because of different reasons like impaired attention or
memory (spatial / visual, rule based), dysgraphia,
impaired planning, organization, or error checking, and
language impairment.
