WHY MATH?

These days, the pressure is higher than ever for students to take and successfully pass math classes, but do all students need math and if so, why?

There are many reasons to learn math, but because mathematical problem solving places great demands on many aspects of brain functioning, it can be very difficult for many people.

In the early elementary grades, students may not see much purpose in math because they may spend a great deal of time learning answers to questions that are already known - but this early type of learning lays important ground work for mathematical thinking, problem solving and analysis, precision, and error detection.

One goal of math in the real world is have a strategy to figure out answers for questions where only partial information is known. This might mean making estimates for a household budget or grocery shopping, or figuring out how much gasoline might cost for a trip across the country.

Mathematical work gives students practice with symbolic thinking, pattern recognition, and reasoning. It also allows students to make predictions about the future (e.g. what is the probability of something occurring).

Mathematical work is also important in almost any research work (including all the sciences), and fields such as engineering, architecture, computer work, business, and medicine.
